Bodies of water freezing but ice fishers should be cautious

Mississippi will have thin ice in many areas

With the sudden dip into subarctic temps are anglers sure to start taking advantage of early ice in Wisconsin.

Just beware, warns the Wisconsin DNR, about ice that may be unsafe.

It can be particularly problematic on stretches of river like the Mississippi River where moving water can leave some perilously thin ice next to areas that are good enough to cut a hole and get to some fishing.

While the DNR doesn’t monitor ice conditions, the agency does recommend not going out alone – or at least tell someone where you’re going – and bringing gear with you like ice claws or picks, a cellphone in a waterproof bag or case and a spud bar to check ice while walking.
