UPDATE: La Crosse man who beat, stabbed and potato mashed victim not fit for trial

The 25-year-old will be committed but condition reviewed every few months.

A La Crosse man accused of assaulting another man with a heated potato masher and a baseball bat is not competent to go on trial now.

Nathan Kohls will be committed to a state hospital for up to a year but his condition may be reviewed every few months.

Kohls was arrested late last year for allegedly attacking a visitor to his apartment. Police say he hit the other man in the head with a bat, stabbed the man’s hand, and forced the hand onto a hot stove surface. Then, Kohls reportedly pressed the hot masher onto the injured hand to close the wound.

He faces a slew of charges after beating and terrorizing the boyfriend of a girl he thought had “snitched” on him. 

Nathan Kohls, a 25-year-old La Crosse native, is in jail facing charges of mayhem, battery, intimidation of a witness, and more. 

The victim told police he knocked on the door of the apartment Kohls was in to retrieve a few items. 

Kohls opened the door and asked him, “What is going on?”

When the victim said he didn’t know, Kohls hit him in the head with a baseball bat. 

Kohls then picked the victim up and led him to a hot stove where he put the victim’s hand on it and stabbed that hand with a knife.

To close the bleeding wound, Kohls reportedly heated up a potato masher with which he tried to cauterize the cut. 

As the victim sat on the couch bleeding, Kohl’s reportedly started to cook fish, and told him his night would get a lot worse if he left.

Kohls was arrested after a short chase.
