Names released in police killing of suicidal man near Black River Falls

Three officers returned fire after being shot at by former La Crosse man.

The man shot and killed by multiple police officers in Jackson County last week has been identified as Donovan Scheurich Sr.

Three Jackson County Sheriff’s officers took down the 50-year-old, who had fired a gun toward police, before they returned fire.

The incident happened in Millston, Wis., which is near Black River Falls.

Scheurich is a former La Crosse native. Police are still looking into why he threatened them.

The officers involved have been put on administrative leave.

Sergeant Evan Mazur has been with the sheriff’s office for 15 years. The deputies, Michael Bartlett and Aaron Johnson, both have worked for Jackson County for six years or less.  

Scheurich’s most recent address was Black River Falls. He had a record of driving offenses and disorderly conduct charges in western Wisconsin in the last few years.

BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. (AP) — Authorities say deputies in Jackson County of west-central Wisconsin shot and killed a suicidal man after the subject opened fire on the officers.

A statement from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded Wednesday evening to repeated 911 calls about a suicidal person who was making threats against law enforcement officers. It says that after deputies arrived, the man fired his weapon. It says “multiple” deputies fired in response, striking and killing the subject. No deputies were injured.

The incident happened in a rural area near Millston, which is about 40 miles northeast of La Crosse and about 12 miles southeast of Black River Falls.

The names of the subject and the deputies involved have not been released. The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
