The Dem. state rep. says legislators need to stop micromanaging from Madison.

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student association recognized Jill Billings on Monday for fighting for them in Madison.

Billings, a Democratic state Assembly Rep. for La Crosse was awarded the Higher Education Advocate of the Year honor for the second time.

Billings said if other legislators want to follow her lead, it doesn’t take much.

“It’s time for legislators to spend more time maybe coming on campus,” Billings said, “and meeting students and seeing the good work that’s being done here and really, not micromanaging from Madison at the capitol.”

Last month UW-L students were in Madison trying to teach Billings a thing or two.

Billings talked how the state needs to invest more in higher education during her awards ceremony.

UW-L student president Jacob Schimmel, recalled meeting Billings, on numerous occasions, about sexual assault on campus.

“She is one of the only legilatures that takes this issue to heart,” Schimmel said.

The student association has given out the award since 2009.
