Search continues for reported body in Mississippi River

Crews began searching for man around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The body has yet to be found, as the search will continue today of the Mississippi River.

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, a witness walking her dog at Houska Park said they heard a man calling for help in the river before, apparently, seeing him go under.

Crews have been searching ever since. They started again at 9 a.m. Wednesday, covering a substantial area south of the downtown La Crosse bridges. So far, rescue has searched from the city sewage plant to the Seventh St. boat landing.

La Crosse fire capt. Todd Adams says they’ve used multiple types of sonar, dragging the bottom of the river and using boats to check along river banks.

Adams says there’s much they don’t know including what he was wearing, and where he got into the river. He encourages anyone who saw something strange near the sewage plant around 3:30 PM Tuesday to call the police.

Cold water could be hampering the body from rising to the surface. Both searches have ended once night has fallen.

The agencies on scene included the La Crosse Fire Dept., La Crosse County Sheriff’s Dept., La Crosse County Dive Team, La Crosse Police Dept., Houston County Sheriff’s Dept., Fort McCoy Fire Dept., Brennan and Bruce’s Legacy.
