Campbell police host Peace Officers Memorial Day

It’s been over 80 years since area officer has been killed.

The Campbell Police Dept. paid tribute Monday afternoon to fallen officers across the country.

A ceremony held on French Island honored those who lost their lives as part of Peace Officers Memorial Day, which was proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy for May 15.

Campbell police chief Drew Gavrilos said that while those who lost their lives in duty get deserved recognition, one group of people is often left out.

“I’ve been to too many funerals of officers who were killed in the line of duty,” Gavrilos said. “That’s one thing that’s so striking, is just the impact that it has on families and the people left behind.”

It’s been more than 80 years since a local officer has been killed.

Representatives from several area departments attended the service, that wasn’t just for local police.

“It doesn’t make a difference where they’re from or what agency or part of the country,” Gavrilos said. “It impacts every single man and woman in law enforcement.”

Congressman Ron Kind made brief remarks during the event, that also included taps and a gun salute
