Veterans, families mark Memorial Day near the Mississippi
Memorial Day first observed 149 years ago
La Crosse’s Riverside Park bandshell again attracted veterans from throughout the armed services for the Naval Reserve ceremony on Memorial Day.
The program included a reading of the original Memorial Day declaration following the Civil War.
That declaration was made in 1868 by Gen. John Logan, the namesake of two public schools in La Crosse.
Strong winds whipped flags placed on the bandshell for the military observance.
