Also says that money made on pot would not add up with mental health costs.

The debate over legalizing marijuana for recreational use continues in Madison with the Wisconsin legislator.

Dr. Chris Eberlein with Gundersen in La Crosse says all you need to do is look at other states.

“Really, look at what’s happened in Colorado and some of these other states,” Eberlein said. “And a lot of it’s not good.”

The doctor then looks ahead to potential problems in those states.

“They’re going to be dealing with a lot of issues, especially with younger people becoming addicted. …  An increase in car accidents from impaired drivers,” he said.

Eberlein added that it’s a slippery slope.

“That’s always a concern with marijuana,” he said. “There’s a lot of research that needs to be done looking at that.

“You are seeing a shift and people using more drugs in general.”

And then, there’s the money factor.

“You gotta look at the other end,” Eberlein said. “You’re going to have increased mental health costs. You’re cost shifting is going to be huge.

“In the end, it’s a money-loss situation, so I think that’s a bad argument.”

Eberlein says the passage of the bill is a long shot at best. It was introduced by state rep. Melissa Sargent.
