One on probation originally charged with attempted murder.

If it weren’t for the seriousness of the crime, Sir Abraham Gallegos of La Crosse wouldn’t even be considered for a prison term.

That’s what La Crosse County Judge Elliot Levine told Gallegos during sentencing Monday, giving him probation instead of prison for a 2015 La Crosse burglary.

Gallegos originally was charged with attempted murder.

Co-defendant, Thomas Jr., was sent to prison for seven years, but Gallegos was given 5 years of probation instead and will be allowed to work and attend school.

Gallegos was 18 years old, and said he was “under the influence,” when he attempted to rob a home two years ago and attacked two men.

Gallegos and Paul Thomas Jr., broke into a King St. home, pistol whipping and tazing the two men living there. The gun failed to fire.

“I do take full responsibility for my actions and understand that there is consequences that do come from those actions,” he told the court. “I can only imagine the pain if it were my siblings or any one of my family members in a similar situation. I wish that upon no one.”

Levine said Gallegos has been cooperative. Family and friends of Gallegos spoke in his defense, saying he’s working and attending school and acting as a mentor to his younger siblings

One who promised the court he was a completely different person that he was from three years ago.
