In July of 1963, Mayor Milo Knutson vetoed an addition for Logan Junior High School, which would have included an indoor-outdoor swimming pool.  It was the second such veto for the project in less than a year.  Knutson said the school should be in charge of academic purposes, and a swimming pool should be run by the recreation department.  The Tribune agreed, arguing that it is not the job of schools to provide a pool for students or the community.  Today, both Logan High School and Middle School have pools.

The U.S. was in the path of a total solar eclipse on July 20th…well, small parts of the U.S. anyway.  Only two states, Alaska and Maine, got to see the moon completely block the sun.  La Crosse got to see about 80 per cent of the eclipse.  The ’63 eclipse was part of a cycle that repeats every 18 years, including the eclipse which will be seen over the Midwest this August.

And Janet Leigh could be seen in two different movies at local theaters that summer.  Leigh, who had just divorced Tony Curtis, acted in the political thriller ‘The Manchurian Candidate,’ and was singing and dancing in ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ with Dick Van Dyke and Ann-Margret.  Fifty-four years ago, 1963, yesterday in La Crosse.
