Looking 20 years into the future, from 1969

The La Crosse State campus paper, the “Racquet,” pointed out that the local college was the smallest in the state system at only 53 acres.  A new 20-year expansion plan would make the college property four times bigger.  A consulting firm from Michigan suggested rebuilding Memorial Stadium in the marsh, and city council president Bernie Maney wondered whether the Memorial swimming pool near Mitchell Hall would remain open.  It was also predicted that by 1988, the campus would have up to three parking ramps.  UW-L has just one ramp. 

An editorial in the Racquet declared that “the human race is dying,” and it would take a major effort for humans to survive the 20th century.

The student senate on campus approved a resolution supporting fund-raising by the Marching Chiefs band, for a trip to perform in the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena on New Year’s Day of 1970…yesterday in La Crosse.
