Man shot on 8th Street after apparent carjacking

A carjacking suspect has been shot and killed by La Crosse police after a chase on the south side of the city.

Officers followed a car after a report that a man armed with a gun had stolen the vehicle from a woman in Houska Park. 

A 1-year-old girl was still in the car when the hijacking occurred. 

The car crashed into a parked vehicle near 8th and Johnson streets, shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday. 

Police say the driver was not following police commands, and two officers fired at him when they saw a handgun inside the car.

The man was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to a hospital. 

The child in the car was not injured.

This is the first death resulting from a police shooting in La Crosse since 1935.
