La Crosse police rescue baby, shoot and kill carjacker
Man shot on 8th Street after apparent carjacking
A carjacking suspect has been shot and killed by La Crosse police after a chase on the south side of the city.
Officers followed a car after a report that a man armed with a gun had stolen the vehicle from a woman in Houska Park.
A 1-year-old girl was still in the car when the hijacking occurred.
The car crashed into a parked vehicle near 8th and Johnson streets, shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday.
Police say the driver was not following police commands, and two officers fired at him when they saw a handgun inside the car.
The man was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to a hospital.
The child in the car was not injured.
This is the first death resulting from a police shooting in La Crosse since 1935.
