La Crosse police body cams coming in 2018
$200,000 budgeted for camera tech for all officers
The police involved killing in La Crosse on Sunday may not be evaluated with the use of body cam footage.
The vast majority of officers still don’t have the cameras. That will change starting next year.
The city has budgeted $200,000 for next year to outfit all police officers with body cams.
The department has been through an extensive evaluation period to try out body cams, testing six of them on neighborhood resource officers since last spring.
Money to purchase the cameras was only approved last month.
It’s unclear what video – if any – was recorded when police shot and killed a carjacking suspect on Sunday evening.
