As I See It
City clerk, but not President, need to be fit for the job
The headline reads, “New bill would require Donald Trump to undergo mental health evaluation.” It isn’t like to pass and become law, but what if there is something wrong with our President? What if we have now realized he isn’t fit for the job? What do we do then? There is no do-over. No trial period. But if I buy a faulty used car, the lemon law says I can take it back. If I buy a shirt that doesn’t fit, I ran return it for a different one. I can even get my money back if I buy a salad spinner from a television infomercial. Get a new President, it seems, and you are stuck. And keep in mind, anybody can be President. They just have to be an American and at least 35 years old. They don’t have to be smart, fair or kind/ They don’t have to tell the truth on the campaign trail. They don’t even have to be competent. Or release their tax returns. Even the La Crosse City Clerk position is now an appointed one, to ensure the person who serves in that position has the intellect and temperament for the job. If we are allowed to determine if the person who becomes a city clerk has the smarts for the job, shouldn’t we do the same for the President of the United States?
