Prosecutor died suddenly during Labor Day trip to Eau Claire County

Jackson County is suddenly without an elected district attorney.

D.A. Gerald Fox died suddenly on Labor Day, while on a holiday trip to a sport shooting event outside the county.

Fox was 56, and apparently died of natural causes, according to Jackson County Sheriff Duane Waldera.

Both men were first elected in 2006.

Fox was the prosecutor at the 2009 murder trial of Doug Sidie, arrested for killing his wife and hiding her body and then going on TV to claim that she was missing.

Assistant D.A. Melissa Inlow will serve as interim prosecutor until the governor’s office appoints a successor.

Fox recently was nominated as a candidate for U.S. Attorney for Western Wisconsin, but did not get the appointment.
