According to the most recent Econowatch study of the local economy, physicians lead the other “hot” occupations mainly in earnings. A doctor in La Crosse averages $75 an hour, which is more than twice the pay of the second-hottest job, community service and social managers.

Rounding out the Top 5 highest-paying, in-demand jobs are first-line supervisors, sales reps and college teachers.

All of the hottest job categories have at least 10 openings a year in the county.

The Top 10 job with the most openings, and the most positions, is registered nurse.

Typically, more than 100 jobs for nurses open up in the county and they pay an average of $26 an hour.

Truck drivers and truck mechanics are also in high demand.
