Trail features educational portion for students

Last fall, nearly a dozen leading construction companies announced support to help the city of La Crosse build a hiking trail in Hixon Forest.

Wednesday, the Building Champions Trail was dedicated atop the bluffs, just as the downpour started.

Those construction companies joined the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and La Crosse’s park dept. in building the 2-mile loop near the weather service office.

Half the loop is dedicated for educational purposes. The trail also has scenic overlooks and goat prairies.

Speaking at the dedication, Jay Odegaard from the park dept. especially praised the planning team for including an educational portion that students can visit.

“And to have a 1-mile loop that they can come and actually walk out on, that touches on some very unique aspects that Coulee Region has that nowhere else in the world has,” Odegaard said.

Ten local businesses associated with construction projects helped pay for the trail.
