In late 1966, Dairyland Power announced plans for another generator at the site of its nuclear plant in Genoa.  The $18 million plant would use steam to produce electricity.  That plant has kept operating long after the shutdown of the nuclear reactor in 1987.

Dial telephones were coming to Norwalk in time for Christmas.  The phone company that served much of Monroe County was laying off five operators who used to answer all the incoming calls at Norwalk.

Holiday plans at the La Crosse Holiday Inn that year, included a Christmas turkey dinner for $2.25, to ribeye for a dollar more.  On New Year’s Eve, you could pay $5.75 to be entertained by Sherry and her Go-Go Quartet at the Cavalier downtown.

For fans of TV cartoons, ’66 was the first year for both “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” yesterday in La Crosse.
