Cookies for the troops, 52 years ago

In the fall of 1965, Greek organizations at La Crosse State ran a week-long campaign, asking for people around the city to donate cookies to be sent to soldiers in Vietnam.  Deposit stations would be set up around town to collect the cookies, and the tins for shipping them.  

The Marching Chiefs band on campus had a busy fall schedule.  The Chiefs had performed at the New York World’s Fair during the summer, and they played at a Vikings home game against the Packers just before Thanksgiving.
 
On this night in 1965, newspaper columnist and radio host Dorothy Kilgallen made her last appearance as a panelist on the game show “What’s My Line?”  Kilgallen died a few hours later at her home…officially from a combination of alcohol and pills.  During her career, Kilgallen reported on UFO’s and the Kennedy assassination, so there have been conspiracy theories about whether she might have been murdered.  TV viewers in La Crosse may not have cared much about Kilgallen’s passing.  WKBT was a CBS affiliate, but it did not carry “What’s My Line” in 1965…yesterday in La Crosse.
