La Crosse schools continue to work on challenging brightest

Challenging bright students in class isn’t exactly a perfect science.

But the High Performance Learning program (HPL) in the La Crosse School District keeps evolving. The program is designed to challenge gifted students.

At a presentation to the school board Monday night, program director Jodi Brueggeman talked of finding ways to increase the number of students taking advanced math.

“We lock in ourselves into that data,” she said. “We needed to look at things differently and give other students opportunities bc their parents or their teachers are saying,
‘No they’re really ready, the data is not showing what they really can do.'”

Twenty-five percent of students in elementary and middle school are in HPL.
