La Crosse doesn’t stack up so well as a college town, apparently.

WalletHub’s newest study on “2018’s Best College Towns & Cities in America” ranks La Crosse 81st out of 201 smaller communities.

In three major categories, La Crosse’s highest ranking was 150th out of all U.S. college cities in ‘social environment,’ and slightly lower in ‘wallet friendliness.’

The city is at number 274 in academic and job opportunities.

There were multiple ways to rank towns. Overall, Stevens Point, Wis., came in 23rd in “Best College Towns & Cities.” Madison came in ranked 30th.

Stevens Point also ranked No. 12 for “small city,” where Ann Arbor, Mich., was No. 1 — home of the University of Michigan.

Among midsize towns, Madison was ranked No. 6

Elsewhere in Wisconsin, Whitewater came in second overall among the lowest cost for college.

WalletHub compared 400 cities in more than two dozen categories.

If students are looking for active nightlife, New York, San Francisco, Portland, and Las Vegas are all tied for first place.
