International student numbers falling at UW schools, including La Crosse

Whether it’s political pressure or some other reason, the international enrollment numbers at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse are falling.

A preliminary report finds 153 students from outside the U.S. are taking classes at UW-L. That’s a drop from 319 students just three years ago.

Eight of the 12 UW System colleges reported declines, though less severe than UW-L.

Changes in policy for scholarships in countries like Saudi Arabia, could be a factor.

Controversy erupted last spring after UW-L canceled a Hmong language class due to lack of students.

School officials say recruiting efforts are increasing to stop the trend that’s going on five years now.
