Vukmir brings Senate campaign to La Crosse

Wisconsin voters will decide in less than seven months between two Republicans hoping to take Tammy Baldwin’s Senate seat.

Over the weekend, members of the La Crosse County GOP heard state Senator Leah Vukmir at its party caucus.

“I’ve put on 41,000 miles on my car since last February and have gone to close to 50 counties, most of them more than once,” Vukmir said.

One of the things she addressed was her support for a Mexican border wall. She said opponents of the wall may have a mistaken idea of what the border barrier would look like.

“I think that the president gets maligned for wanting to create this wall,” Vukmir said. “People try to make it out like the Great Wall of China. There are ways to create security perimeters to take care of the areas that are porous.”

Cost, not cosmetics, may be a big issue with the wall. Right now, it’s part of the reason for a government shutdown. It could cost $20 billion over seven years if fully funded.

Vukmir’s primary opponent is Kevin Nicholson, who has been criticized for switching from the Democratic party years ago. Republicans in Wisconsin have won only four elections for the Senate in the last 60 years.

If they defeat Baldwin this fall, the GOP will have both of Wisconsin’s seats for the first time since the 1950s.
