A face-lift for “Green Acres,” 35 years ago

Thirty-five years ago, the city of La Crosse was getting ready to replace the Green Acres overhead…the bridge on State Road that passed over railroad tracks near K-Mart and Central High School.  The new bridge was scheduled to be finished by the end of ’83.  That same year, a similar bridge over train tracks was being built for the first time on Copeland Avenue, as part of Highway 53.  The Copeland overhead is now considered roughly the halfway point for the Oktoberfest Maple Leaf parade.
 
Dayton’s at Valley View Mall was advertising 22 to 66% off on all sorts of “gadgets” for your home.  Many of the gadgets were kitchen items…including cheese graters, lemon juicers, pizza cutters, spaghetti tongs, and nutcrackers.
 
That January, the Washington Redskins defeated Miami in Super Bowl 17 (XVII) at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.  Millions of viewers who saw the game on NBC stuck around afterward to watch the first weekly episode of “The A-Team,” starring George Peppard and Mister T…35 years ago, 1983, yesterday in La Crosse.
