As I See It

Lemonade stands finally legal in Wisconsin

Sometimes when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. That is what is happening in Wisconsin, as our lawmakers work to pass a law to allow kids to set up lemonade stands without worrying about a visit from Big Brother. The Assembly has passed a bill that would legalize lemonade stands in Wisconsin. Under current law that is not the case. Like most government regulations, there is too much red tape. In order to be legal in their efforts to sell delicious glasses of lemonade, kids must first get a local permit or a state license. This isn’t usually an issue. Few kids get all that paperwork, and most in government are content to look the other way. But in Apppleton, some young girls running a lemonade stand were raided and shut down by police for not having the proper permits. What does that teach the kids? That government is bad, or at the least dumb. It doesn’t exactly instill confidence in our democracy among young people when they are busted for selling lemonade in an effort to fill their piggy bank. Why don’t we make these young entrepreneurs form an LLC and get a federal tax ID number too? It is good our lawmakers have shown some common sense, and chosen to make lemonade out of lemons.
