A new brewery is closer to reality in La Crosse.

A city council committee gave preliminary approval Tuesday for the 608 Brewing Company to open a brewery and taproom in a 4,000-square-foot space on Copeland Ave. just north of Causeway Blvd.

It was a unanimous vote by the committee and a full-throated endorsement from city council member Jessica Olson.

“I think what you’re doing is a good contribution to our economy and our local, you know, an improvement to our local drinking culture so thank you so much,” she said.

There are some conditions to the approval. One is that the taproom can stay open until midnight instead of 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, as the brewery operators wanted. Another is that the brewery is limited to making a 1,000 barrels of beer per year.

The full council votes next week on final approval for the brewery.
