A 20-year-old man from La Crosse is being charged with choking and beating his girlfriend, three years after the alleged crime.

Elijah Burks is accused of seven criminal counts, including strangulation, battery, and false imprisonment.

The victim claimed that she and Burks got into an argument at Western Tech in 2015. She said he grabbed her ponytail and pulled her into a men’s room, where he kicked her, knocked her head onto the floor and tried choking her.

Burks avoided arrest until last year, when he was caught and jailed in Monroe County.

On top of that arrest, just last week, Burks was given probation on a charge of sex with a teenager, and got a three-year diversion agreement on another sexual assault charge.
