Paramedics face issues driving to weather-related accidents
It’s a busy time of year for the workers ambulances.
Winter, of course, leads to several accidents. But, what happens when an ambulance crashes racing to a call?
Tri-State Ambulance executive director Tom Tornstrom with Gundersen Health System said there is training for the drivers.
“And that involves, basically, more so defensive driving and avoidance of obstacles and accidents but certainly the road conditions play into how we drive, as well,” Tornstrom said.
If an ambulance gets backed up in traffic or is involved in a crash, Tornstrom says there are usually 5-7 other ambulances that can respond instead.
Other drivers can help by getting to the side of the road as quickly as possible if an ambulance is coming. When it is stopped, try to get as far left to avoid a potential collision, especially in this weather. Tornstrom said the need for cooperation is essential to making sure people are cared for.
