UWL keeps tuition firm, as other UW campuses look to raise rates

Tuition hikes could coming for graduate and non-resident students at state schools in Wisconsin next fall.

Despite raising tuition a couple years ago, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has kept things fairly steady, recently.

It’s something UW-L chancellor Joe said they constantly monitor, given the uncertainty in funding.

“State support can be reduced, dramatically, as it had been in past budgets, so it’s something we’re always thinking about, absolutely,” Gow said.

The UW System Board of Regents could vote this week on the tuition hikes for UW-Milwaukee, UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire.

“It’s the last thing that we want to do, is raise tuition,” Gow said. “In a perfect world, we would have enough state money to have people go for free.”

UW-L’s balance in tuition costs has to do with consistent enrollment, according to Gow.

“We like to see it go up, obviously, but sometimes that can cause some issues with class availability and space within the residence halls,” Gow said of enrollment. “In the other direction, you don’t want it to go down, because that’s a big hit to the revenue of the institution.”

Gow added that in addition to low tuition, they also try to keep everyday fees down, as well.
