La Crosse County may be getting ready to promote vaccinations against a virus that can cause multiple types of cancer.

The county health and human services board voted to accept a $12,000 grant to publicize use of the vaccine against HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).

“We know that there’s a very, very strong link between HPV virus and cervical cancer,” Bryany Weigel, a public health nurse for La Crosse County, said.

Gundersen Health System in La Crosse will work with the county and a pro-immunization group to develop advertising, aimed at getting children aged 11-14 vaccinated, “which helps in the prevention of six different kinds of cancer,” Weigel added. “The vaccine offers the best protection to children in that age group.”

Weigel also said the virus can remain dormant for decades in the body before causing cancer.
