The city of Onalaska is about to get a drone.

The city council approved the decision this week. The drone will cost $10,200 with $5,000 coming from an anonymous donation.

The drone would be used by multiple city departments from police and fire to parks and rec.

City councilman Bob Muth addressed concerns that the device might not be needed.

“I don’t know what the future holds for us for incidents that are going to occur,” he said, “but I want to give our staff any tool that I can possibly supply them with to do their job and do it in a safe manner.”

The motion to buy the drone passed 7-2 with council members Jerry Every and Ron Gjertsen voting no.
