Assistant police chief in Onalaska officially gets promoted to chief

The city of Onalaska has made it official. Troy Miller will be the new police chief.

Miller had been assistant chief, and became acting chief after the recent resignation of Jeff Trotnic.

Miller was appointed chief this week by the Onalaska police and fire commission. Miller has been with the Onalaska police force for 22 years and rose to assistant chief in 2009.

Just days after police chief Jeff Trotnic suddenly resigned, the city announced fire chief Don Dominick is retiring.

Dominick has been fire chief for the last 11 years and retires after a 39-year career as a firefighter.

Dominick’s retirement is official on June 22.

Questions are still swirling around the abrupt departure of Trotnic, who had faced mounting criticism after months of an anonymous public shaming effort over an extra marital affair.

The Onalaska city administrator insists Trotnic’s only stated reason for leaving is to pursue other career opportunities. He was at the department for a decade.
