As I See It

Spin doctors try to narrate what the election is about

We are months away from the election, but the spin doctors are already hard at work. They are setting the narrative they hope will allow their candidate to win. We see that in the race for a Wisconsin U.S. Senate seat. Incumbent Tammy Baldwin is the target of PAC’s which are running ads suggesting Baldwin is to blame for troubles at the Tomah V.A. Her supporters are fighting back with a $1 million campaign of their own saying Baldwin is not to blame. Governor Walker has recently given more money to schools, cut taxes and landed Foxconn. That is the message he is spinning. In the Supreme Court race, the republican and democrat candidates will argue one is tough on crime, while the other is soft on crime. This is all an effort to get you to focus on the things those spin doctors think are important, or at least important to helping them win election. The truth is the U.S. Senate race is about more than the Tomah VA and who is to blame. The Governor’s race is about more than cutting taxes and landing jobs. And the Supreme Court race is about more than who is tough on crime. The spin doctors will keep spinning, but we can choose to ignore them, and find out for ourselves how the candidates feel about the issues important to us.
