La Crosse yard waste site opens, now accepting compost

You can start bringing compost with your yard waste now in La Crosse.

The city opens the Isle la Plume yard waste drop-off site Monday.

Along with your sticks and grass, you can bring along anything one would normally compost (apple cores, egg shells, coffee filters, orange rinds, onion peels, etc.).
Absolutely no proteins like meats and dairy, though, the city notes, because those can create pathogens in the finished compostable material.

“This could be a really easy solution but we could also screw it up really quickly if people put the wrong stuff in there,” Pam Hartwell, executive director of the Hillview Urban Agriculture Center in La Crosse, said.

In addition, Harter’s is accepting compost in its curbside yard waste pick up, which is a subscription service that starts at $12.50 per month.

The Isle la Plume is meant to be used by La Crosse residents only but the city has typically struggled to enforce the limit.
