Onalaska, Sparta school reps testify about education funding to commission

The last time the school funding formula changed in the state of Wisconsin was 1993. It’s a totally different world now. 

That was the prevailing sentiment expressed at the Blue Ribbon Commission on school funding meeting Monday at North Woods International School in La Crosse.

A group of Wisconsin legislators and education experts there heard presentations on school funding.

Onalaska superintendent Fran Finco told the committee he’s ready for substantive action in fixing the funding formula.

“Ten years ago, they went around the state, they did all the same things you’re doing,” Fincol said. But didn’t have the bold enough gumption to make big ideas happen. So, that’s what we’re asking you. Don’t just tweak it.”

Finco suggested a five-year plan regarding student aid and having it reviewed every two years. That way districts could better plan out future budgets.

“Come up with a five-year plan so that business people can at least plan on what you’re thinking down the road,” Finco said.

Also speaking was Sparta superintendent Amy Van Deuern, who said the district is actually growing but they are limited to what they can spend based on the formula.
