Immediate repairs needed on La Crosse’s George Street bridge

The George Street bridge that crosses the Canadian Pacific rail lines in La Crosse is in need of immediate, emergency repairs.

The ’emergency’ portion simply means the city can fix the bridge without going through the bid process. It does not mean the bridge is failing right away.

Inspections last year on the bridge turned up some problems with the spans. One of those spans simply didn’t winter well, we’re told.

The city’s engineering department has said the bridge is safe to drive on and all lanes are open to traffic.

The city council will look to appropriate $68,000 for immediate repairs.
