Court victory comes as City Hall battles over other downtown assessments

The city of La Crosse has been arguing over tax assessments of some downtown buildings lately, but City Hall has just gotten one assessment victory in court.

State appeals judges have ruled that La Crosse’s assessment of the 100 Harborview Plaza building for 2012 was correct.

The city valued the former Heileman brewery headquarters at $5.5 million…which was $2.1 million higher than the owners claimed.

Harborview Plaza owners took the city to circuit court, and appealed the ruling which was made in La Crosse’s favor in May of 2016.

The 4th District appeals court cites the building’s prime location facing the Mississippi River as a justifiable reason for a higher assessment value.

The judges also ruled that the building owners had not proven the city’s assessment was excessive.

The 100 Harborview building houses Reinhart Food Services, Cleary Management, and the 4 Sisters Wine Bar.
