Emergency snow disposal period begins in La Crosse

After years of unuse, the city of La Crosse now has utilized a snow emergency ordinance to declared a 48 hour snow disposal period twice in the same month.

Starting at three o’clock Sunday afternoon, the city’s Superintendent of Streets declared a 48 hour snow disposal period.

The notice went out early Sunday morning in the midst of a punishing April winter storm.

Overnight on Saturday, the city was blanketed by a mixture of ice, sleet, hail and snow, making travel extremely difficult.

The city’s police department says the snow disposal period means you have to park your car on the side of the street with even addresses for an entire even calendar day.  Odd addressed sides on the odd calendar days.

The snow emergency declared earlier this month was largely ignored as police wrote 319 warnings over a four hour period but neither ticketed or towed any vehicles that were parked incorrectly as is allowed under the ordinance.

That 48 hour disposal period was ended a day early when it became clear the eight inches of snow that fell was not going to accumulate on the streets.

The current snow disposal period is scheduled to last through 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
