It was a Sunday night police standoff near Jackson Street in La Crosse last August.

Officers had stopped a stolen SUV and rescued a 1-year-old girl inside, after shooting and killing the carjacker when he threatened them with a gun.

The Wisconsin Professional Police Association (WPPA) is now recognizing those two La Crosse policemen for bravery in ending that crime.

Officers Stephen Hughes and Andrew Adey received awards at the police association’s state banquet this month.

The WPPA also commended La Crosse County dispatcher Jason Allen, who took the original call from the child’s mother, after the SUV was taken from her at gunpoint.
