Garden Terrace apartment project collects city TIF funding, clears way to begin construction

The ast funding hurdle has been cleared for a big housing complex on La Crosse’s north side.

There are some high hopes about the impact the Garden Terrace apartments next to the Kane Street Community Garden.

And now a decision made by the Economic Development Commission Thursday means there will be a chance to see if those hopes get realized.

The Commission agreed to a proposal from the group Impact Seven to collect a grant through one of the complex Tax Incremental Finance District funding mechanisms.

The $136,000 grant comes on the heels of a $683,000 federal tax credit award for the project.

Garden Terrace will be a multi-family development with 50 apartments — 15 reserved for low income households — as well as veterans and the homeless. Construction will begin in July.
