A potentially tragic moment of distraction in Vernon County.
Vernon county police say a three vehicle crash in the Town of Coon Monday afternoon ended with a motorcycle wedged under a car.
Police got the call at 4:07 p.m. Monday from the intersection of U.S. highway 14 and County Highway B east of Coon Valley in the Town of Coon.
Police say a 53 year-old woman from the Westby area was stopped in the westbound lane of highway 14 signaling to turn left onto B.
Linnea Rice, 45, from Onalaska, was on a motorcycle and stopped behind the woman’s car. She was hit from behind by 21 year-old Allison G. Hawthorne from rural Westby.
Hawthorne drove up and over Rice and slammed into the first car.
Somehow, Rice was able to get free from under the car with help from the two other drivers and others who had stopped.
Apparently Hawthorne was distracted by an over sized load convoy.
Rice was taken to Mayo in La Crosse. Not clear yet whether Hawthorne faces charges.
The accident is still under investigation.
