Party chair takes unusual approach to recruit Republican candidates locally
It’s not something that happens often — a help wanted posting, for wannabe state lawmakers.
La Crosse County Republican Party chair Bill Feehan has taken that approach to recruit candidates to run for the state assembly.
His new post on Facebook seeks candidates for the 94th and 95th assembly seats.
“To be honest with you, I don’t understand it,” Feehan said. “We’ve always had no trouble attracting at least one candidate for that race (the 94th). Trump carried the district with 52 percent of the vote.”
The 94th district is currently represented by Democrat Steve Doyle, a district that tends to lean Republican.
“I guess you could say it’s probably a testimony to Steve Doyle and the fact that he’s been active in politics in our area for so long,” Feehan said.
Feehan is also hoping for a candidate to run against Democratic state rep. Jill Billings in La Crosse — although that’s a seat, Feehan acknowledges, for which those Republicans who do sign up to run tend to get beaten pretty badly.
