Maid-Rite approved as historic site
City already has ordered old cafe to be demolished
It may be in the shadow of a wrecking ball right now, but a long-time cafe in north La Crosse has been declared a historic local landmark by a city commission.
The Heritage Preservation Commission voted Thursday night to give landmark status to the Maid-Rite building on Caledonia Street.
The Maid-Rite closed its doors two years ago, and the city has issued an order to tear down the 137-year-old building.
Owner Joe Van Aelstyn described to the commission how he hopes to restore much of the building to its original style.
A court hearing on the demolition order is scheduled in June.
