La Crosse polling places to change as St. Paul’s Lutheran church prepares to close
A congregation dissolving after well than a hundred years in La Crosse means voters will have to find a new place to cast ballots.
Tonight, a city council committee considers moving the 8th district city council voting place. It’s currently in St Paul’s Lutheran on West Avenue.
A congregation diminishing in numbers, however, means the church building will be sold and the congregation will disband. A person WIZM reached at the church said the reason for the closure was the congregation was “getting older and older, and smaller and smaller.”
St Paul’s has been in its current location at 420 West Avenue for the past 57 years. It first organized as a congregation in the city in 1870.
The church building is currently going through an appraisal.
The new polling place for the 8th district will be in the new Coulee Recovery Center on Ferry Street. Another polling place at UW-La Crosse campus is also planned for a relocation across campus.
