Moon Tunes returns Thursday at La Crosse’s Riverside Park.

The free, weekly summer program, which began in 2012 as a noon-hour series, has become so popular with performers that there are sometimes two headline acts on the bill in one night.

Organizer Terry Bauer says big-city talent agencies want to get in on the shows.

“I’ve had agents from New York, Chicago, Nashville, Milwaukee all call and say, ‘How do we get a band on your stage?'” Bauer said Monday morning on WIZM. “I said, ‘You don’t. We’re local. We’ve got so much talent here. We’re going to stay with what works.'”

Bauer also talked about upgrading the stage.

“We put together a group and we’re going to do some fundraising to put a shell on the bandstand so it actually has acoustical values,” Bauer said.

He added that there wouldn’t be enough room underneath the proposed La Crosse Center addition for a new bandshell.

Moon Tunes begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday with Bill Miller again starring in the opening concert. It will run through the first week of September, finishing with the traditional Woodstock tribute.
