You can add the La Crosse Regional Airport to the list of area governments looking to improve fire protection service.

City leaders are voting this month on a request for funding from Madison and Washington.

“In general, the fire fighting apparatus, are around that $750,000 mark for the type of equipment we utilize at the airport,” airport director Clinton Torp said.

Torp says the facility has two trucks and it’s time to upgrade.

“We try to cycle those pieces of equipment out every 15-20 years,” Torp said, with their oldest fire engine built in 1997.

“Regulatorily, we’re required to maintain certain levels of fire protection with foam being the real priority with aircraft and fuel. That’s the best method for fighting those types of fires.”

Last week the Holmen Area Fire Department decided to buy a new fire engine at a cost of $861,000, to replace its 30-year-old truck. Campbell’s fire department was also in line to spend around $500,000 on a new truck.
