Most run away from a fire. Some run toward it. Timothy Colgan is one of those guys.

Colgan and Sharon Syverson have both been recognized for their efforts in saving a family from a house fire on April 28th in the town of Campbell.

Syverson noticed the fire at 2 a.m. while delivering newspapers and honked the horn in her car until Colgan came outside to see what was wrong.

He woke the family inside the Muth Road home and both he and Syverson got them all out safely.

Campbell police chief Drew Gavrilos calls the efforts of the two, ‘remarkable.’

“They took it upon themselves to go and make sure everybody was safe and out of the house.  It’s pretty cool, it’s a pretty neat thing.  in law enforcement when you see something like that, it makes your day,” Gavrilos said.

Both Colgan and Syverson were recognized as a ‘Community Hero’ during a brief ceremony at a town board meeting Tuesday night.

These are the first such awards given in the town.  Gavrilos says he plans to recognize more ‘Community Heroes’ in the future.
