La Crosse County preparing to launch study for expanding juvenile center
The state of Wisconsin has decided to close two schools for juvenile offenders, meaning some counties might take on more juveniles at their own facilities.
This week, the La Crosse County Board will be asked to hire a consultant to look into the need to remodel the current juvenile detention facility or replace it with a new, larger building to bring in more from those state juvenile schools that will be closing.
The detention center is part of the county health building constructed in the late 1980s, on the site of the old Sawyer Auditorium.
The county may apply for a $28,000 grant to pay for the building study. An architectural firm has already been selected.
