Bishop Curry helps local church celebrate anniversary of its founding

The congregation of a La Crosse Episcopal church rose to its feet on Saturday to applaud the message of the church’s leader, who has become famous for his address at Prince Harry’s wedding in England last month.

Episcopal Bishop Michael Curry was the main speaker at the Christ Episcopal Church anniversary celebration of its first communion in La Crosse, atop Grandad Bluff on June 23rd, 1850.

Curry described the local church’s rector, the Rev. Patrick Augustine, as “one of God’s holy characters.”

Often waving his arms and gesturing for emphasis, the bishop made references to Jimi Hendrix, Dr. Phil, and the astronomer Copernicus in his sermon about love, and about people putting God first in their lives.

Curry also mentioned his role in the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, calling the event a “little fancier” than most weddings, and saying the couple’s love brought the U.S. and the United Kingdom together.

Curry’s visit to La Crosse was part of a tour within the Episcopal Diocese of Eau Claire.
